Yes, that is a hole drilled in the upper right corner of the back. Someone must have had a radio or something on the top shelf.
I believe the shelves are poplar with a brown stain. They are definetly not oak.

This is a very nice single door bookcase with 4 adjustable shelves. It is solid oak. As you can see by the reflection in the glass it is the original wavy glass. It is 57" tall, 30" wide and 14" deep. The shelves are a full 12" deep. It has a very nice gallery top so things won't fall off the back.
The lock works and I found a key that works in the lock.
I'm not sure why this photo has such a green tint, it may be all the grass reflected in the door.
