Old Desks and Library Tables

 L&JG Stickley Uncatalogued Desk

Inventory No:  A883    $1,650.00

Attribution based on drawer hardware.  Top is 48" wide by 30" deep and 28" tall.  There is a retailers lable on the underside of the shelf that reads

Everthing is original and all joints are tight, nothing loose.  There are nicks, dings and imperfections typical of a hundred year old piece of furniture, but nothing out of the ordinary. Top is tounge and groove joint as is typical of many L&JG Stickley pieces.

The finish is original, cleaned and given a protective coat of wax.

The chip in the edge is along a joint line, the dark ring is probably an old water mark rather than ink.

The top is all quartersawn, the better grain is towards the front.

The front is towards the bottom in this photo, the upper right corner in the photo above this one.

Note the small nick in the lower left corner of the left hand drawer.

The back looks just like the front except no drawers.

Slightly to the right of center you can barely detect the tounge and groove joint in the top.  Look for the discontinuity of the flake lines.  Just shows how tight the joints are.

Back left corner.

Arts and Crafts Library Table

This is the most incredible library table I've come across in a long time. Wonderfully shaped Mc Murdo style feet, unique stretchers with a small shelf in the center.  The top is 3 - 12" wide boards 48" long with great figuring.  The top boards are splined. On both ends is a small shelf for your favorite books.  It is a standard 30" high.  The top is notched around the legs and the legs are cut flush with the top.

Many of the library tables of this era had deep drawers or wide aprons that made it difficult if not impossible to get your legs (well, knees really) under the table.  The apron on this table is only a few inches wide so sitting here is no problem.

The table is unmarked as to manufacturer but is definitely a well made table

Inventory No:  CAS2:  $2,250

The color on the above photo has been adjusted to make the spline more visible.

The top has a few stains on one end as shown above, however they are less pronounced as the above photo would indicate.  See the photo below.

Arts & Crafts Drop Front Desk by Mc Hugh

This is an incredible desk that deserves a good home.  It is all solid quartersawn oak.  No veneers anywhere. The body is 42" wide and 21" deep when closed.  With the front open the writing surface is 30" high and 24" deep to the cubbies.  The top shelf is 38" above the floor and is 8" wide.  The backsplash is an additional 8" high.

The drop front, the large drawer across the front and the two doors lock.  We have the original key.  The compartment on the left side has a single shelf and the compartment on the right has two slots on the floor and two slots on  the top of the compartment.  It looks to me as if there used to be vertical dividers that separated the compartment into 3 sections for large ledger books.

While the desk is unsigned I believe it was made by Cushman, although the hardware is marked "Tobey patent".

We recently came across a desk chair that I believe was the chair made to match this desk.  It is in pretty good condition and is being cleaned up to be sold with the desk.  Photos will be added soon.

Inventory No. A724:  $2,395.00 with matching chair.

Price Reduced:  Now $1,895.00 with matching chair.

The seat is leather on a board with cotton padding.  The cotton was is in need of replacement and the board was split in half.  Therefore we had to remove the leather which was tacked down to the chair seat to replace the board.  It is ready for new leather, or if you prefer, fabric.
