This is a very fine tall back rocker in the style of Stickley brothers, but it is not signed. The back is 43-1/2" high and the seat is 18" above the floor. The seat is 20" across the front and 18" deep. The arms are 5" wide in the front and taper to 4" in the back, they are 25" above the floor. The two outer slats in the back are 2-3/8" wide and the center slat is 7" wide. The corbels are 10" long.
This photo is a bit dark but it shows the rocker with the rebuilt seat. It is presently covered in denim. Recovering in your fabric would cost $45.00 with sewn corners, not folded.
This is the original seat cushion after all the old material was removed. There were a few broken wires all of which were replaced before it was recovered.
Oh! Look. White socks!
As acquired all the joints were tight The joints are mortise and tenon but they are not pinned. The front legs are mortised through the arms. |

Morris Chairs

It is very hard to tell if this is original finish or an old refinish. However, there are no drips or runs which are indicative of being refinished and the edges and corners are crisp and have very few dings and nicks. The inside surface of the side slats are darker where the seat cushion would shield them from the sun. In my opinion it could be original but there are no guarantees. You will have to judge for yourself. The seat cushion is a wood frame with webbing. Sewn to the webbing is a 6 by 6 set of coil spring, topped with a medium density foam and all wrapped in dacron and finally covered in a light tan denim. The back cushion is a marshal unit wired together at the edges to form a knife edge. This is wrapped in cotton and dacron and covered in the same light tan denim with loops at the upper corners. Dimensions: The seat is 24" deep and 23" wide. The back
is 21-1/4" wide and 41" high in the upright position. The arms are
35" long and 5' wide. The upper crest rail of the back is pinned
to the uprights. The front legs are mortised through the arms and
pinned from the inside. There are 9' long corbels under the arms
at all four legs. The arms are 24" high and the seat is 17" high.
The front seat rail is doubled pinned at the front legs. There
are 6 slats under each arm and four horizontal slats in the back.
The back slats are slightly curved. The front is 25-1/2" wide across
the outside of the legs.
Inventory No. 1008 As is: $3,250.00 firm

I had the matching settle and rocker several years ago, and the pair sold for $3,900. We recently found the chair but the customer who bought those two pieces did not have the room for the chair so we are offering it here. Inventory No. CMJ29 $1,500.00 This is a large chair, it is 27-3/4" deep, 38" high in the back and 31-1/4" wide across the back legs. The seat is 20 deep and 21-3/8" wide, adn 17-1/2" high. The arms are 6" wide and sit 26-1/2" off the floor. The back is upholstered and there is one slat under each arm centered front to back. The seat is removable consisting of a wood frame, webbed with coil springs sewn to the webbing, covered in burlap, 2" of foam and 2-1" layers of cotton and finally the celtic knot fabric. The fabric is provided by Archive Edition.

This chair is unmarked but may possibly be by Harden. It is 40" tall with a 21" wide back. The 5 slats under the arms are 1-5/8" wide and the 6 slats in the back are 1-7/8" wide. The seat is 18" high, 20-1/4" wide across the front and 19" deep. The arms are 26" high and the corbels under the arms are 18" long. It is all doweled construction. The seat is the original coil spring seat that has bee stripped of the original covering and recovered in denim. Add $45 to have it recovered in your fabric with sewn corners, not folded.

This is an unsigned settle by Cortland. Cortland had a very distinctive
through tenon, somewhat pointed. It is 70" across the outside of
the arms. The arms are 4" wide in the front with a cushion that is
60" wide and 21" deep. The seat is 18" high. The back legs
are 38-1/2" tall, the arms are 26" high. The overall depth is 27".
The finish does not appear to be original but I don't know whether it is
an overcoat or a refinish.
Seat is covered in a nice chocolate brown leather. |

Even arm settle by Harden. The seat is 72" long by 24" deep. All of the seat material is new. We made a wood frame which was webbed. 3" coil springs were tied to the webbing in an array of 6 deep and 18 across. This was overlaid with 2" medium density foam, 1" of cotton and a layer of dacron. All covered in a tan denim. The denim will wear well until covered in fabric or leather, and will hold it all together when, in 20 or 30 years, it needs to be reupholstered. The settle is obviously a bit larger, 80" long and 27" deep. It is in very good condition, very solid with pinned mortise and tenon joinery. There are 3 slats on each end and 12 across the back. The arms are 31-1/2" high and are 4" wide. The legs stand 32" tall and the seat is 17" high. The front rail is mortised through the side of the front legs and the top side stretchers under the arms are mortised through the front of the front leg. The distance between the outside of the front legs is 78". There was some color loss, mainly to the arms which has been blended in. Those parts also were missing all their finish and the remainder was thin so we also gave it a light overcoat of shellac. Inventory No: A 1019 $2,950.00

Inventory No: A1014 & A1017: $1,600.00 The chair and rocker are not exactly the same size so where you see two dimensions below the rocker dimension is first and the chair is second. If only one dimension is listed then it is the same for both. The width across the back is 22-1/4" (22-1/2") and the depth is 23" (22-1/2"). Both have seats that are 21" deep and 19" wide across at the center. The back leg is 35-1/2" (38") and the arm height is 25-1/2". The arms are 4" wide. The seat height is 18" (19") and the width across the front is 26". There are 5 slats across the back and 4 under the arm. The Front seat stretcher is double pinned and mortised through the front leg and the side stretcher under the arms is mortised through the front of the front leg. This joint has a single pin.

While these two pieces are similar in style and design as the settle
above, they were not obtained at the same time and have slightly different
stains. The settle is a bit redder in color than the chair and rocker,
and even between the chair and rocker, the rocker is a bit darker.
Both pieces have ware and nicks typical of their age. 80 or so years. The above photo shows the worst of the scratches/nicks.
The rocker was originally purchased at the J.B. Van Sciver store in Camden, NJ. |
